It’s been almost 2 years since we started this last economic downturn. And in that two years the prices for USB flash memory has CLIMBED!
That’s right I said CLIMBED!
As it turns out the USB flash memory manufacturers, more specifically the Toshiba’s and Samsung’s of the world decided to cut manufacturing to levels that caused the prices of the memory chips to climb during this past economic downturn. We have been selling this product since 2001 and every year EXCEPT the last two the price of memory per MB has dropped significantly.
It is possible that the real reason prices have climbed over the past 2 years is that the 2.0 USB flash memory is being phased out and the 3.0 USB flash memory is about to ramp up. That is what I saw back in 2002 and 2003 when 2.0 flash memory replaced 1.1 compliant memory.
That is all still to be decided. What I have noticed from my vendors in China is that memory prices are coming down. Not all that fast but they are coming down. For those customers looking for 1GB USB flash memory for $3 unit… It’s not coming down that fast…
